Cervical disc replacement (CDR)
It is a surgical procedure that replaces a damaged spinal disc in the neck with an artificial disc:
• Purpose
CDR is a treatment for chronic and acute neck pain, stiffness, and arm pain. It can help relieve pain by decompressing nerve roots and restoring the height of a collapsed spinal disc.
• Procedure
During the procedure, a surgeon:
◦ Makes a one- to two-inch incision in the neck
◦ Removes the damaged disc
◦ Inserts the artificial disc
◦ Closes the incision with sutures
• Recovery
Most patients can return to light work and driving within a week, but a full recovery can take six to 12 weeks. Patients should expect to rest and undergo physical therapy during the recovery period.
• Benefits
CDR can help restore the spine's function, flexibility, and strength. Patients can often return to normal activities and a pain-free life.
• Risks and alternatives
CDR is a newer surgical procedure, but studies have shown it to be safe and effective.
